Documentary highlights struggles between rangers and rebels

IN NOVEMBER, 2014, Netflix released a film titled Virunga, which successfully generated a major response from viewers around the globe. Closely aligning with operators in the tourism industry, the film brought attention to issues that have existed within the National Park for several years. Only a handful of tour operators have observed firsthand the current conditions in Virunga, one being Jessica Pociask, owner of WANT Expeditions – the world leader in highly personalized, conservation-oriented small group travel.

AT 17h55, Sunday, 11th January, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew dispatched the sea rescue vehicle and launched the sea rescue craft EIKOS RESCUER IV following reports of a Dolphin beached at Main Beach, Blue Water Bay, Port Elizabeth.

Kayak fisherman found safe

AT 12h30, Sunday, 11th January, NSRI Durban duty crew dispatched the sea rescue craft MEGAN II and a sea rescue vehicle to Sezela Beach on the KZN South Coast following a bystander reporting finding a fishing ski washed up on the beach with fresh fish and a mans ID book on the fishing ski but no sign of the man. NSRI Shelly Beach dispatched their sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF DAWN and the Police Search and Rescue were activated. While responding to the scene it was reported that the owner of the craft, a Jason Savell, had been found safe on the beach. He had reportedly swum ashore after his anchor line broke while fishing off-shore of Sezela and he was not injured and resources stood down after confirming that no further assistance was required.

Dutch kiteboarder dies

AT 17h35 on Tuesday the 6th of January, NSRI Mykonos duty crew were activated following reports of a kite surfer in difficulty off-shore between Mykonos and the Langebaan Lagoon Mouth. NSRI Mykonos launched the sea rescue craft Transnet National Ports Authority TNPA Rescuer One and on arrival on-scene, 1 kilometre off-shore, the kite boarder, a 39 year old Dutch man, was found lying face down in the water.

Book details 27 000 km journey on water

Record drop in fuel prices

A RECORD fuel price decrease in South Africa will bring much needed relief to indebted consumers. The record drop in the price of all grades of fuel and diesel will give deeply indebted consumers an opportunity to reduce their debt load and start saving for a rainy day. The largest petrol price drop yet scheduled for Wednesday, January 07, will see 95 octane petrol drop by R1.23 a litre while 93 octane will decrease by R1.27 a litre. The price of diesel will decrease by between R1.04 and R1.05 per litre.

NSRI responds to three incidents at Plett

At 11h50, Monday, 05th January, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were alerted to injured passengers aboard a charter boat. The charter boat had reportedly encountered heavy swells causing some passengers to sustain minor injuries and they had come back to Plettenberg Bay where they sought assistance from NSRI.
